Welcome Filmogs → homevideo

Filmogs is back, as homevideo: homevideo - ctlgs

Why the new name. Filmogs was always more about the discs and tapes than the films. A DVD, its 2008 reissue and the German Blu-ray are three different things worth cataloging separately, even though they’re the same movie. “home video” is the industry term for exactly that, so the catalog is built around the release, with the film as something releases link to. If you want to catalog a movie, you’ll find it here. If you want to catalog your copy of a movie, that’s the point.

What came over from Filmogs. All of it:

  • 71,002 releases
  • 50,555 films
  • 21,449 companies
  • 179,686 credits

What I changed on the way in. Company roles were free text in Filmogs and had drifted into 5,422 different spellings — Distributor, Distributed, Distributed By, Distribuidora and Distribution all meaning one thing. They’re a dropdown of 14 now, and I folded the old values into it. Region, color, video standard and packaging got the same treatment. Packaging is a proper list, so a keep case inside a slipcase is two entries instead of one comma-separated string.

What’s still rough. The import came over as-is, so expect oddities. Credit roles are still free text and in exactly the state the company roles were — Actor, Cast, Actress and Starring all sitting side by side. Identifying code types need the same work. And some roles turn out to be notes somebody typed into the wrong field. Corrections welcome; that’s a good part of what this is for.
