How to credit when the book's printed credit is wrong?

Here’s a question that should be clarified in the guidelines, when they’re cooked.

I’m about to submit a bunch of Editions where the illustrator credited in the first printing is the wrong person. The publisher noticed and fixed it in the next printing, and then managed to get it wrong again in the third printing, but only in one of the two places in the book that had previously been wrong. After a couple of years  the publisher noticed again, and finally fixed both from the 6th printing onwards.

The credits are for “Illustrator” and “Copyright Holder (Illustrations)”, but do we credit the person named in the book, or the person who should have been credited? Or should we try for some way to represent the mixup without resorting to an explanation in the notes either way? An additional ‘miscredited’ flag?

I already think we need a ‘Description’ or similar field for every credit assigned to an Edition as I’m having to enter some things as Other and have folks guess what ‘Other’ might mean. Some fields need extra qualification sometimes, too.

This is tricky. I don’t really like the Miscredited flag. And it seems difficult to set a guideline around capturing what the publisher intended. I’d like to hear more opinions on this for sure.

What would you use Other for when it’s possible to type a more descriptive credit?

I don’t understand what you mean by this. A credit attribution has a :title and a :role. I can’t add a description to the :title because then it wouldn’t be the credit as it appears. I can’t add a description to the :role because then the entity won’t validate (and it wouldn’t be a good idea if you could).

The same restrictions apply to the :code list.

I use ‘Other’ for when the credit or code represents something that doesn’t have a dedicated role or type. The description would describe what the role or type is.

A description could also be used when you need to add more detail about the nature or position of the value. eg:

ISBN: 0-12-345678-9 (on back)
ISBN: 012.03.4567 8 (on spine)
