This works now, thanks! But tall, thin images display zoomed in - I guess it’s fitting the image to a width, rather than its bounds.

Do you mean that when the gallery view is opened that image is too tall?
Yes. If you click the spine image, or cursor to it from a previous/later one, it’s zoomed in so it disappears off the top and the bottom. If you open the spine image in a new tab it’s fine. It’s like that in the latest Firefox and Chrome for Windows 11.
